Scranton receives $30K wellness grant from IDPH

The Scranton community is one of five towns that will receive 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! grants from the Iowa Department of Public Health for the fiscal year 2021 (July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021). Scranton will join Ottumwa, Sergeant Bluff, Spencer and Winterset in receiving funding for the first time this year.

The 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! program aims to increase physical activity and healthy eating in children and families throughout the community. The program involves creating healthier environments in schools, early care and out-of-school programs, health care practices, workplaces, and communities.

The 5-2-1-0 program encourages

• Eating five or more fruits and vegetables a day

• Limiting recreational screen time to two hours or less a day,

• Getting one hour or more of physical activity daily, and

• Drinking zero sugary drinks by drinking more water.

October is the Healthiest State Month in Iowa, and Scranton residents can help the town celebrate. October 5 through 9, the goal is to get one hour of physical activity or more per day.

Scranton will host a walk during the Healthiest State 10th annual walk. Families are encouraged to meet in the city hall parking lot at 4:45 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to participate in the Scranton Healthiest State Walk.

Members of the Scranton 5-2-1-0 planning committee, who are all so excited for this fantastic opportunity for the city of Scranton, will be at the walk.
